about
‘Harry’ is the new single from rising indie songwriter Daire Heffernan. It’s the first release since the singer’s 2022 EP ‘Wasters’ and showcases a new side to her music with 90s inspired guitar melodies and a cinematic atmosphere. With ‘Harry’, Heffernan draws on new and old references including beabadoobee, Big Thief, Cocteau Twins, and Lilys. "Heffernan's cocktail of shoegaze, electro, country and indie is a potent one" - Garry Baylon, The Goo Magazine.
It’s a dream pop song about new love and marks a departure thematically for the singer. “After writing so many songs about men in my life who had hurt me or let me down, it felt so good to sit down and write this one from a place of happiness. It was actually probably the fastest I've ever written a song, no metaphors or poetry needed.” - writes the 20-year old. “The movie-scene feeling was so much fun to create and play with the band. I hope that translates through the recording and it’s just as enjoyable to listen to.”
Heffernan made waves last year following the release of the ‘Wasters’ EP with the singles ‘Skeletons’ and ‘Midwest Emo’ getting considerable airplay from RTÉ and BBC NI as well as press coverage from Nialler9, Hot Press, and The Goo. She has been steadily developing her live show over the last year with sold out shows Upstairs in Whelans and The Workmans Cellar. She has supported acts including Paddy Hanna and Neil Dexter while also doing a live session for Dan Hegarty in RTÉ studio 8. “The songs are incredibly strong, and sound well placed alongside the best that artists like Nadine Shah, PJ Harvey, and Aoife Nessa Francis have brought us over the years” - Dan Hegarty, RTÉ 2FM.
To celebrate the release of the single, Heffernan has announced a gig Upstairs in Whelans on Friday, April 21st. ‘Harry’ was produced by Spies’ Hugh O’Dwyer and recorded in Sun Studios, Temple Bar. It was mastered by Ivan Jackman (Gilla Band, Black Midi) at Hellfire Studios.
lyrics
You said my tattoos were cute
And I fell in a hole
Cigarettes before class
I think they're taking their toll on my system
But I don't think I need them anymore
Cause of you
Fell asleep on your shoulder, on the train
But I don't think that you mind Green Eyes by Coldplay
In my headphones I'm praying on wishbones my Dear
You're here
And I don’t even need to get high anymore
Oh Harry, I think that you are the cure
Not high anymore
Not high anymore
Not high anymore
Fireworks dotted across the sky
We look out your window but we stay inside
Blowing smoke out
I’m glad that I broke out for you
Who knew?
And you told me you loved me for the first time
In your shitty apartment while I threw up your wine
Cemeteries, your friends had to carry me home
Oh no
And I don’t even need to get high anymore
Oh Harry, I think that you are the cure
Not high anymore
Not high anymore
Not high anymore
